Victory Lane Visits by Read and Larson as Sabraski Double-Dips

June 18, 2012

Granite City Speedway

By: R.J. Sahlstrom (June 17)

Rains came down at the track a few hours prior to race time that had no bearing on the races at Granite City Speedway. 105 race teams were set and ready to battle for the checkers in five WISSOTA classes along with the Hobby Stocks. The crowd in the grandstands got involved in the festivities in anticipation of some great race action. The show was sponsored by Mathison Motors as one lucky fan in the stands was chosen in a drawing as the winner of a 2006 Monte Carlo.

The race action was hard to beat as Shane Sabraski double-dipped feature wins in the Midwest Modifieds and Super Stocks. The other WISSOTA/AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series victories went to Dave Read and Dean Larson.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to the Feature green by Don Eischens and Tim Johnson. Eischens charged out to the lead on the first circuit only to see the cautions lights flash on lap two. Unfortunately for him and his tough field of competitors the yellows came on due to a fast approaching thunderstorm. The drivers were all sent to the pits and the race was postponed. It will be made up as part of the next scheduled regular program on June 23rd.

Modified heat race victories were claimed by JB Stortz and Dave Cain.

Setting the pace of the WISSOTA Super Stock field to green in the Feature were Seth Kramer and Jake Goetz. Goetz set the pace from the beginning and drove a strong race to lead the first seven rounds. Dave Mass led the race briefly for one lap when he was passed on the next round by Shane Sabraski who started outside row four. Sabraski blazed the trail for all remaining laps to sweep the field and claim his second checkers for the night. Following his Affordable Chassis to the finish were Tim Johnson, Dave Read, Mass and Goetz.

The Super Stock heat race wins went to Mass and Sabraski.

Due to the depth of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified field a B-Feature was needed to set the last three rows in the Main Event grid. Tagging on to the A-Feature line-up were Dan Flowers, Christopher Zenner, Marc Miller, Dave Barrett, Corey Koenig and Kyle Schmidt.  George Sniezek and Danny Vang would be sitting on row one for the A-Feature. Vang nabbed the initial lead of the main event as he would set the pace for the first eight circuits. Shane Sabraski clawed his way up to the runner-up spot from a row four start to battle Vang for the lead on lap nine. As they exited turn four the front tires of their cars contacted each other with both drivers spinning out of control. Vang was charged with the caution and was sent to the back for the restart. Sabraski took charge from that point of the race forward to earn a spot in victory lane. He was followed in his Mathew Hall Lumber entry to the checkers by Dan Ebert (from 9th), Jason VandeKamp (from 11th), Bud Martini and Justin Oestreich (from 12th).

The Midwest Modified heat winners were Martini, Corey Eystad and Travis Schulte.

On the front row for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature were John Adams and Justin Pogones. Adams took a very brief lead on lap one until Pogones passed him on lap two. Pogones dominated the main event through lap eighteen. It took a few restarts to get the final laps of the contest completed as things on the track were very unsettled. Dave Read led the most important lap of the Feature to cap off a clean sweep in his Wollak Construction sponsored ride. Behind him at the finish line were Pogones, Ryan Kostreba who worked his way up from 10th, Kurt Becken and Adams.

The Street Stock heat checkers were taken by Read and Pogones.

Leading the field to the WISSOTA Mod-4 feature green were Tommy Bawden and Landon Atkinson. Atkinson led the event for the first three rounds. The yellow lights blinked briefly on lap four for a spinout in turn four. On the next lap Atkinson and Dean Larson got together as they exited turn four. Larson ended up in the lead on lap four as Atkinson dropped back a couple of spots from the unscheduled meeting. Two more cautions would happen during the remaining laps as Larson continued to lead the rest of the pack. The current WISSOTA National point leader took the checkers in his Laske Chassis and ran over to the front straight fence to do his patented victory climb. The crowd roared its approval for his efforts. He was chased at the finish by Kyle Thell, his son, Tyler Larson, Matt Halls and Atkinson.

Atkinson and Dustin Zieske won the heat races in the Mod-4 class.

The Hobby Stocks made their first ever appearance tonight. On the front row for the Feature were Matt Everts and Chris Isdal. A caution came out right away on lap one for a car spinning on the front straight. On the restart Everts grabbed the initial lead for lap one. A series of cautions came out on laps two, eight and nine for various incidents. Tim Lavoi took control of the race as he took the lead on lap two and never looked back to finish a clean sweep. He was followed to the checkers by Dan Thell, Taylor Willms, Ray Midas and Kegan Ahlquist.

Taking the wins in the Hobby Stock heats were Jeremy Fleck and Lavoi.

The next event at Granite City Speedway will be a regular Sunday racing program on June 23rd. The first green flag drops at 5:00pm. If you are looking for a new venue for some exciting dirt track racing on a Sunday night, come out to the Granite City Speedway.
