SAUK RAPIDS, MN (August 25, 2017) – Ashley Mehrwerth has won a few features at other tracks, but had never won at the track closest to home, until she scored a breakthrough win in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature at Granite City Speedway.
Starting from the pole, Mehrwerth quickly got the jump on Tom Gill and Ryan Studanski.  Gill and Studanski fought hard for second allowing Eric Lamm to close in as well.  Meanwhile, Mehrwerth was setting the pace out front.  A late caution with less than five laps remaining bunched the field and gave Lamm a shot at taking the lead.  Mehrwerth held her ground and led the drag race out of the final turn to edge out Lamm for the win.  Studanski finished third and leads Tyler Kaeter by 31 points in the standings.
“I was looking at the scoreboard and I seen the 3 (Studanski) and the 88 (Lamm),” said Mehrwerth afterwards.  “I was just waiting for them to get by and that was the most nerve-wracking thing.  I was hoping that I wouldn’t see the yellow flag, but it happens, its racing.”
The close finish at her home track for her first at Granite City Speedway was something special too.  “The competition is really tough here.  It means a lot to win here.”
After problems in his heat race, Jim Gullikson put the train back on the track as he won the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature.  Kyle Howland led from the start as Charlie Shiek, Tim Johnson and Gullikson staged a three-wide fight for second.  Gullikson was able to emerge with the spot and soon began to pressure Howland for the lead.  On lap eight, Gullikson made a power move out of turn two to capture the lead.  Shiek also was able to get past Howland, but had nothing for Gullikson as he went on to take his 6th win of the season by a four car length advantage.  Gullikson maintains a mere six point lead over Justin Pogones headed into the final points night of the season.
Tim Johnson drove aggressively when he needed to and that was the key to him winning the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature.  Dan Severson yielded way to Jared Zimpel for the lead in the opening laps.  Hungry for his first win of the season, Dexton Koch moved up and took the lead on lap six, bringing Johnson along in tow.  On lap 10, Koch who was running the high side, got trapped behind a lapped car.  This allowed Johnson to dive low in turn one and to take the lead.  A late caution gave Koch a shot at taking it back, but Johnson proved to have the upper hand as he held off Koch to take his fourth feature win of the season.  Koch’s second place finish maintains his points lead over third finishing Denis Czech by a 20 point margin.
Bob Holtquist makes the drive to Granite City Speedway every Friday from Milbank, SD and those miles on the road reaped the rewards of victory as Holtquist won the Mod 4 Feature.  Starting outside the front row, Holtquist got the jump on Dwight Gilyard from the get-go.  The front pair stayed close nearly the entire race, but Gilyard was unable to get by as Holtquist took his second feature win of the season.  Dean Larson recovered from a mid-race spin to finish fourth and has a 24 point lead over Dustin Holtquist in the standings.
After his big sister’s win in the Midwest Modified Feature, Cory Mehrwerth put another one in the family trophy case as he won the WISSOTA Hornet Feature.  Mehrwerth took the lead from the onslaught.  Jake Smith, Joseph Wilber and finally Justin Schelitzche all challenged Mehrwerth for the lead.  Schelitzche came up a car length short at the finish as Mehrwerth took home his third win of the season.  Schelitzche’s second place finish puts him 21 markers ahead of Brittany Smith in the Hornet standings.
Andy Zimmerman took his fourth win in six starts in the Outlaw Mini Mod Feature.  Points leader Jack Rivord, still searching for his first win of the season, took the early lead.  Zimmerman worked his way to the front and took the lead on lap three.  The top two ran tight, but Zimmerman wasn’t about to let this one get away has he took the win.  Rivord’s runner-up finish gives him a 15 point lead over Tommy Patton with one point’s race remaining.
Just as the WISSOTA Modifieds were pulling on to the track, heavy rains enveloped the racing surface, ending racing for the evening.  The feature will be made up on Season Championship Night, September 1st.  Don Eischens leads Denis Czech by 40 points with two features remaining to determine the Modified title.
Coming up on Friday September 1st, it will be Season Championship Night.  A full program of WISSOTA Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mod 4’s, Hornets and Outlaw Mini Mods will be running, plus the makeup WISSOTA Modified Feature.  Gates open at 6 pm, with racing starting at 7:30pm.  For more information and to purchase tickets online, go to www.gcspeedway.com
