VANG GETS FIRST MODIFIED WIN AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

VANG GETS FIRST MODIFIED WIN AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

By Dean Reller

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (July 14, 2017) –  After numerous seconds and thirds, Danny Vang finally broke through to record his first Minnesota Truck Headquarters WISSOTA Modified Feature win at Granite City Speedway on Central McGowan night.

JT Johnson led the rush into turn one, but by the end of the first lap, outside pole sitter Vang moved to the front and set off at a blistering pace.  Fourth starting Denis Czech quickly moved into second, but Vang was on a roll as he extended his lead on every lap.  Czech would fall to as much as a full straightaway behind leader Vang, by the time the checkered flag waved as Vang finally scored a win at Granite City Speedway.

“It helped starting up front, but I knew we were going to get up and run the high side and keep it off the wall ,” said Vang following the race.   The cautionless race allowed Vang to sneak away from the rest of the field as the race wore on.  “We didn’t need a caution and it worked out in our favor.  It was fun to get out front and let the car work a bit.”

Travis Schulte worked his way through the field as he took the win in the Accurate Hearing WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature.  Tom Gill led from the start, with Andy Mayavski and Ryan Studanski behind.  Keith Thell’s spin on lap 5 brought out a caution to bunch the already bunched field.  Gill held the lead on the restart, but Schulte was working hard and quickly moved into second.  After a couple of close laps, Schulte finally moved by Gill on lap 10 and never looked back.  Studanski would work his way into second, but that would be it, as Schulte went on to take the win.

Tim Johnson led when it mattered most as he won the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature.  Davey Kruchten took the lead and quickly locked down to the bottom of the track.  Meanwhile, Jim Gullikson took to the high side and the front pair ran side by side for the top spot.  Gullikson took the lead on lap four as Kruchten stayed close as he continued to run the low side.  Gullikson would then break away as Kruchten and Johnson battled for second.  By the time Johnson was able to take second, Gullikson had a significant lead.  Johnson slowly began to chew away as the laps ticked off.  With one to go, it was nose to tail for the lead with Gullikson still out front.  Johnson got a good run out of turn two and then completed the pass in turn three.  From there it was a short sprint to the checkered flag as Johnson led only the final lap in taking the win.

Adam Prieve capitalized on a great starting spot and cashed in as he won the WISSOTA Mod 4 Feature.  Prieve outran Bob Holtquist from the drop of the green.  Holtquist chased the entire race, but couldn’t get the run he needed as they would run the entire race without a caution giving Prieve his second victory of the year.

The Northern Vintage Stock Car Racers were on hand and Gary Whipple held off John Olmscheid and Tom Ahrndt for the Full Bodied win.  Mark Bjorklund came out on top in the Super Modifieds as he defeated Kevin Lipsky and Ken Sabby.

Since switching back to his primary car, Justin Schelitzche racked up his second straight win in the WISSOTA Hornet Feature.  Jake Smith led from the start as Schelitzche pulled behind his bumper.  On lap eight, Schelitzche pulled alongside Smith before taking the lead the following lap, just before a caution for Matthew Dittman’s spin.  On the restart, Schelitzche maintained the lead as he would keep Jake Smith and Brittany Smith behind the rest of the way as he went on to the win.

Shane Sabraski was back in familiar territory, Victory Lane, following the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature.  Ryan Schaufler had an impressive start as he took the lead from the get go.  Fourth starting Sabraski soon was in second and challenging for the lead.  Sabraski pulled off the pass in turn two and began to pull away as Dave Mass was working his way toward the front.  A late caution for Levi Voss’s spin negated Sabraski’s lead.  On the restart, Sabraski maintained the lead as Mass and Tim Johnson fought for second.  That battle would help Sabraski to solidify the win.

“The track was pretty racy for the Supers tonight,” said Sabraski afterwards.  “I jumped out in the lead really early and Mass was coming at the end and I kind of heard him.  So, I had to switch lanes and was able to hang on to the win.”

Coming up on Friday July 21st it will be the AFCO Race of Champions Qualifier.  A full program of WISSOTA racing will be on tap including: Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mod 4’s and Hornets.  Plus, the Outlaw Mini Mods will be racing as well. Gates open at 6 PM, with racing starting at 7:30 PM.  For more information go to www.gcspeedway.com
