Thell Thunders To Granite City Mod Four Win

August 12, 2019

Sixty four race teams entered action at the Granite City Speedway in Sauk Rapids, MN on Sunday night, August 11th under sunny skies with the Micro Sprints in action along with the normal 5 WISSOTA divisions.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modfiied feature was the first feature on the track and saw Andy Mayavski and Shane Howell pace the field to the green flag. Mayavski lead the opening lap with Howell alongside but Zach Benson quickly snuck by on the bottom into the top spot and began to stretch his lead as the laps wound down. A late race restart bunched the field, putting the charging Travis Schulte into the second row and on the restart he pounced and overtook Benson for the lead, which he held to the checkered for his second straight Granite City victory. Benson ran second at the checkered with Howell, Mark Martini and Matt Baker rounding out the top finishers.

The WISSOTA Hornet feature was a battle from start to finish with early leader Alex Aderman sitting out front during the early stages of the event. Aderman lead a tight pack over the first several laps with Nate Servaty, Grayson Pratt, Zachery Schreder and Justin Schelitzche on his heels. After a yellow flag flew, Pratt overtook the top spot and held off 12th starting Schelitzche to the checkered but did not pass post-race tech and was disqualified, handing the win to Scheltizche. Servaty came home second with Schreder, Doug Martin and Joe Wilber rounding out the top five.

Jordan Henkemeyer sat on the pole for the WISSOTA Super Stock feature and lead the field to green, but 7th starting Dave Mass wasted no time at all slicing through the field into the top spot, which he would take mid race and proceed to drive away lap after lap to a convincing victory over Henkemeyer, who was able to hold off a charging Dexton Koch and Shane Sabraski. Kurt Becken came home with a solid fifth place finish.

The Micro Sprint main event was a non-stop affair, which saw pole sitter Zack Nelson drive off from fellow front row driver Tyler Rabenberg and proceeded to lead all 15 laps and win convincingly. Rabenberg was able to hold off Cole Elton for second with Jack Berger and Joe Snow coming home with top five finishes.

The WISSOTA Mod 4’s were up next with Dwight Gilyard and Dean Larson leading the field from the front row. Larson took the lead on the opening lap and tried to drive away from a highly contested battle for second between Gilyard, Keith Thell, Jamie Flickinger and Dustin Holtquist. Thell used the top groove to work his way from the fourth row into the runner up spot and was ready to battle for the lead after a late race caution allowed him to put pressure on Larson’s #37. On the restart, Thell took over the top spot and raced away to the victory. Larson ran second with Flickinger, Gilyard and Bob Holtquist in the top five.

Tyler Kaeter raced to his second straight WISSOTA Modified victory to conclude action on Sunday night after starting in the second row and overhauling early leader Peter Loecken for the top spot and then holding off a charge from Dave Cain and Shane Sabraski for the win. Cain and Sabraski battled side by side for the runner up spot over the last few laps, with Cain able to hold second and the line. JT Johnson and Denis Czech were fourth and fifth as the checkered flag flew.
