MASS FLIES THROUGH THE FIELD TO TAKE SUPER STOCKS AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

MASS FLIES THROUGH THE FIELD TO TAKE SUPER STOCKS AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

By Dean Reller

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (June 9, 2017) –  Dave Mass found the right groove as he shot through the field and came out on top in the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature at Granite City Speedway.

Josh Zimpel started up front and took the lead from the start.  Shane Sabraski wasted no time as he quickly pulled behind and started to pressure for the top spot.  By lap three, Sabraski has pulled off the pass to take over in front.  However, Mass was making moves of his own as he got up on the high side and soon was all over Sabraski.  With eight laps remaining, Mass powered by to take the lead for good.  Sabraski tried to battle his way back to the front, but could only chase Mass to the checkered flag.  “We found a couple of things that let loose for a little bit and got some traction back in the car and it was running pretty good,” said Mass following the race.  “We started in the back and had to wait for some holes to open up.  The car was good enough that we could pick and choose a little bit.”

Shane Sabraski made it back to back wins as he took his second straight WISSOTA Modified Feature.  A three-wide dash into turn one saw Denis Czech emerge as the leader.  It was a short stay as Sabraski was the car to beat as he took over the lead and then pulled away from everyone as the cautionless race allowed Sabraski to put significant distance between himself and Czech by the time the race ended.  Tyler Kaeter finished in third.

Jim Gullikson had the race come to him in the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature.  Kyle Laney led the opening lap, but Justin Pogones soon had worked his way into the lead.  Gullikson closed the gap and soon ran alongside Pogones for the lead.  With four laps remaining, Pogones spun while leading, giving Gullikson the lead on the subsequent restart.  That advantage proved to be enough as Gullikson held off Laney and a late charging Charlie Shiek who finished third.

For the second time in as many weeks, Dean Larson was climbing the fence after yet another victory in the WISSOTA Mod 4 Feature.  Dustin Holtquist and Adam Prieve tangled on lap two.  On the restart, Larson motored into the lead and never looked back.  Trever Roediger gave chase, but had nothing for Larson as the race wore on.  Prieve worked his way back through the field to finish third.

Joseph Wilber cashed in on a prime starting spot as he won the WISSOTA Hornet Feature.  Wilber started on the pole and that helped him stay in front of some intense racing behind him.  Corey Mehrwerth, Erik Cleasby, Justin Schelitzche and Joe Martin ran each other hard as they all chased Wilber, who would lead every lap on his way to the win.  Mehrwerth would hold off Cleasby to finish second.

Taton Hansen came through the field to win the Outlaw Mini Mod Feature.  A tangle between Hansen and Tommy Patton on the opening lap saw Hansen have to restart at the tail of the field.  Tyler Rabenberg took the lead, but with seven laps left, Rabenberg’s car slowed on the backstretch triggering a caution.  On the restart Hansen, took over the lead after having rocketed by everyone as he put himself back into contention.  A late caution kept the others relatively close, but no one had anything for Hansen as he tore to the win.  Jack Rivord finished second with Rabenberg rebounding to finish third.

14 year old Tyler Kaeter showed the veterans a thing or two as he won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature.  Kaeter took the lead on lap two and never relinquished it holding off Travis Schulte and Matt Baker for the win.  “It was pretty fun to go out and win the heat and go out and win the feature,” said Kaeter afterwards.

Coming up next week, it’s the Father’s Day Special at Granite City Speedway.  A full program of WISSOTA racing will be on tap including: Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mod 4’s and Hornets.  Gates open at 6 PM, with racing starting at 7:30 PM.  For more information go to www.gcspeedway.com
