Gold Cup Double-down for Sabraski

September 28, 2012

Granite City Speedway
By: R.J. Sahlstrom

History was made once again at Granite City Speedway as the first day of the inaugural Gold Cup hit the dirt oval. 128 race teams were set and ready to battle for the checkers in five WISSOTA classes. The weather was incredible for the end of September as race fans prepared for the festivities of the triple-header. Sponsoring the final weekend of the 2012 season was Brandl Motors and Bradshaw & Bryant Trial Lawyers.

The race action was awesome as Shane Sabraski double-dipped feature wins in the Modifieds and Super Stocks. The other WISSOTA/AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series victories went to Dave Mass, Brad Schmidt and Kyle Thell.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to the Feature green by Dave Mass and Shane Sabraski. Sabraski wasted absolutely no time as he blasted out to lead the charge towards victory lane. He saw a brief delay in his quest for the checkers when Zach Drews spun out in turn four on the fourth circuit. On the restart Sabraski continued his attack on the clay oval. He encountered lapped traffic at the mid-point of the contest and weaved his way through them to cap off a clean sweep. Chasing the West Metro Buick/GMC entry at the end were Clayton Wagamon (from 9th), Mass, Dan Ebert (from 11th) and Jason Thoennes. Modified heat race victories were claimed by Drews, Sabraski and Mass.

Setting the pace of the WISSOTA Super Stock field to green in the Feature were Dan Gullikson and Adam Ayotte. Gullikson set out to be the driver in command as he would lead the first eleven rounds. He survived three cautions on lap three and one on lap five that would send the eventual sixth place finisher Donnie Lofdahl to the rear of the field. Dave Mass took the final lead of the main event on lap twelve. Dave Read and Mike Frolik tangled on lap thirteen bringing out a caution. Read was sent to the back and Frolik was given an early exit to the pits for his retaliation on Read. Mass went back to work on the restart and survived two late-race yellows rolling the Shaw Trucking sponsored ride to a sweep. Following him to the finish were WISSOTA National Co-point leaders Shane Sabraski and Tim Johnson. Behind the strong trio of drivers were Gullikson and Mike Loomis.

The Super Stock heat race wins went to Mass, Cory Tammen and Johnson.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified field was 39 cars strong requiring two Semi-Features to complete the Main Event starting line-up. Joining the rear of the A-Feature grid were Clayton Wagamon, Bud Martini, Jason Hoffman and Christopher Zenner. Travis Schulte and Denis Czech would occupy pole positions for the Feature. Schulte grabbed the initial lead of the race and would trade it twice with Dan Ebert during the first three laps. The lonely caution of the contest flew on the fourth circuit for Ryan Bowers who lost visibility when his hood flew up in his line of sight. On the restart Shane Sabraski blazed to the front of the pack to take the lead. He drove through lapped traffic starting on lap sixteen and held off multiple challenges from Jason VandeKamp on his way to a second clean sweep of the night. He was followed in his Stearns County Abstract Company entry to the checkers by VandeKamp, Ebert, Czech and Schulte.

The Midwest Modified heat winners were Sabraski, Czech, Corey Koenig and VandeKamp.

On the front row for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature were Brad Schmidt and Mike Jans. Jans took a very brief lead on lap one until Schmidt passed him on lap two. Schmidt survived three cautions on lap three and continued his ascent towards winners circle. With about five laps remaining Schmidt developed traffic issues that would attempt to set him back. Current WISSOTA National point leader Dave Read was back in the saddle again after missing a few weeks due to injuries. He had a very short glimpse of the checkers as he got past Schmidt during the seventeenth round. Schmidt was not to be denied the trophy as he reclaimed the lead and drove the KB Properties ride to victory lane. The current WISSOTA National Rookie point leader was chased to the finish line by Read, Justin Pogones, Jans and Adam Soltis.

The Street Stock heat checkers were taken by Pogones and Jans.

Leading the field to the WISSOTA Mod-4 feature green were Landon Atkinson and Kyle Thell. When the green flag dropped Thell saw the light at the end of the tunnel and he knew how to get there. His only delay in the process was when the yellow lights blinked on the second circuit for Nick Jelacie who was out of commission next to the wall in turn three. Thell continued to dominate when the green flew again and had to deal with traffic from lap thirteen and beyond. He worked his way by and lapped a few cars on his way to the checkered flag and a sweep for his efforts. Behind the Halls Racing Engines power plant at the end were Atkinson, current WISSOTA National Rookie point leader Tommy Bawden, Chad Funt and Aaron Wetterlin.

Landon Atkinson and Kyle Thell won the heat races in the Mod-4 class.
