CAIN ROCKETS TO MODIFIED WIN AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

CAIN ROCKETS TO MODIFIED WIN AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

By Dean Reller

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (July 7, 2017) –  Veteran driver Dave Cain used his years of experience as he powered to the win in the Minnesota Truck Headquarters WISSOTA Modified Feature at Granite City Speedway.

JT Johnson and Tyler Kaeter fought it out on the opening lap, before Kaeter took the lead.  Johnson pressured Kaeter as seventh starting Cain was quickly making his way towards the front.  By lap four, Cain was in second and turning up the heat on Kaeter.  Four laps later, Cain pulled off the pass and began to pull away.  Don Eischens would work his way into second, but without the aid of a caution, that would be as far as he would get.

“They put a little water down on the bottom,” said Cain as he described the track conditions.  “It wasn’t too dry and one and two were really tacky on the high side.  There was a little up on the top side of three and four.  I think we made all our passes on the bottom, but then got up to the top and just coasted.”

Jim Gullikson missed the heat race, but when it counted, he was where he wanted to be after the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature.  Charlie Shiek and Gavin Rowland duked it out on the opening lap as Shiek emerged as the leader.  Gullikson was the man on a mission as he quickly moved from a dead last starting position to second in just a couple of laps.  By lap three, Gullikson had moved by Shiek and took control of the race.  Gullikson extended his lead to as much as a full straightaway by the time he took the checkered flag.  Shiek barley held off Justin Pogones and Kevin Schmidt to finish second.

Officially Scott Engholm started on the pole and took home the win in the Accurate Hearing WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature.  The laps between the start and finish weren’t quite so easy as Engholm had to fight for the win.  Ryan Studanski wrestled the lead away on lap two, but Engholm remained in contention as series of four cautions through the middle stages of the race, kept the front pair close together.  With five laps remaining, Engholm was able to squeeze by Studanski, bringing a pack of cars along as well.  Engholm would hold off the late challenges of Tyler Kaeter and Tommy Bawden to take the win.

It was a father vs son race in the WISSOTA Mod 4 Feature and in the end, it would be the son who would prevail.  Bob Holtquist started on the pole, with the junior Holtquist (Dustin) starting alongside.  Bob led the first seven circuits, but then Dustin took over and didn’t relinquish it the rest of the way as he took the win.

Dave Mass took the lead late and hung to win the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature.  Dalton Landwehr and Ryan Schaufler raced each other hard for the lead in the opening laps.  That allowed fifth starting Shane Sabraski to keep pace before he moved to the front on lap six.  Eighth starting Mass following Sabraski to the front and when Sabraski dropped off the pace with four to go, Mass picked up the lead and never look back as he tore to the win.  Dexton Koch and Denis Czech also stepped thing up as they ended up finishing second and third.

There was plenty of action in the Outlaw Mini Mod Feature.  In the end it was Ryan Hensel who emerged as the survivor in the caution plagued event.  Tommy Patton led the early going as five cautions in the race’s first six laps dramatically slowed the race.  On a lap seven restart, Jack Rivord got the jump on Patton as he took the lead.  It was a short stay as 3 laps later, another pair of cautions slowed the event.  On the final restart with four laps remaining, Hensel grabbed the lead and held off Taton Hansen for the win.

Troubles for Nate Servaty allowed for good fortune to fall upon Justin Schelitzche in the WISSOTA Hornet Feature.  Jake Smith took the lead from the start as Servaty was one of many contenders chasing the leader.  Servaty put his car in front with six laps remaining and appeared to be on his way to a win.  Then, just as he took the white flag, he blew a tire, which gave the lead to Scheltizche.  All Scheltizche had to do was to complete the lap as he remained ahead of Corey Mehrwerth and Joe Martin to take the win.

“I didn’t know he had a problem”, said Schelitzche following the race.  “I kind of had a line set and it was working and kind of got stuck there.  I got passed, so I tried a different spot and that line flew and we were pretty much side by side with one to go.  I went into turn one and he (Servaty) was just gone.  So, I just came around the corner and seen the checkers.”

Coming up on Friday July 14th it will be Vintage Stockcar Night.  A full program of WISSOTA racing will be on tap including: Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mod 4’s and Hornets.  Plus, the Northern Vintage Stockcar Racers will be on hand and running events as well. Gates open at 6 PM, with racing starting at 7:30 PM.  For more information go to www.gcspeedway.com
