ATKINSON MOTORS TO MODIFIED WIN AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

ATKINSON MOTORS TO MODIFIED WIN AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

By Dean Reller

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (July 28, 2017) –  Landon Atkinson turned in one of the strongest WISSOTA Modified runs for any driver this season at Granite City Speedway as he scored an impressive win.

Atkinson got the jump on pole sitter JT Johnson and quickly asserted himself in the lead.  Atkinson expanded his lead to full straightaway as Johnson and Don Eischens battled hard for second.  This allowed Atkinson to extend his lead to nearly a half lap, before lapped cars played a factor in tightening up the lead.  Eischens would cut the margin significantly in the final laps, but Atkinson’s lead was insurmountable as he went on to the win.

“The lapped traffic was tough,” said Atkinson afterwards.  “There were three of them right in a group and I just had to pick and choose which end.  I wanted to go to the bottom to get around them and was hoping that one of them wasn’t going to cut me off or stuff me or anything like that.  I was looking up at the scoreboard and I saw the 9 (Eischens) in second and was worried he was going to come blazing around the outside of me if I didn’t get a good run.”

Jeremy Nelson won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature.  An opening lap crash collected five cars forcing a complete restart of the race.  Travis Schulte took the lead with Nelson locked in behind.  Nelson got past on lap six and slowly began to pull away.  A late caution erased that advantage and gave Schulte a shot at taking the lead back.  Nelson had the better car as he held off Schulte to bank the win.

After taking a win earlier this season in her station wagon, Brittany Smith parked her new ride in Victory Lane in the WISSOTA Hornet Feature.  Smith took the lead from the get-go and didn’t squander the opportunity as she led every lap and held off her brother Jake to garner the win.

Justin Pogones made a pass at the right time as he won the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature.  Kyle Howland and Kevin Schmidt swapped the lead in the early going before Howland looked to be on his way to a win.  Pogones made a last lap surge out of the final turn and took the lead for the only time in the race as the checkered flag waved above him.  Howland would finish second, with Schmidt taking third.

Andy Zimmerman was fast all race long in the Outlaw Mini Mod Feature.  Zimmerman took the lead from the start and every restart of the race as he turned in a nearly flawless effort.  Jack Rivord and Gavin Tarras were close to being the only ones who could keep pace. Tarras moved to second in the final few laps, but could only chase as he followed Zimmerman to the win.

Shane Sabraski was hooked to the bottom and that spelt trouble for everyone else as he won the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature.  Levi Voss jumped out in the lead from the start as he ran the high groove.  Sabraski worked the bottom lane in and a handful of laps later, he moved under Voss to take the lead.  Denis Czech rallied late in the race and was right behind Sabraski as he took the checkered flag.  Tim Johnson worked the top side of the track and nearly managed to catch the front pair, but he banged off the wall a couple of times late in the going and had to settle for third.

Mitchell Hribar doesn’t race at Granite City Speedway all too often, but when he does, he’s always a threat to win and that he did in the WISSOTA Mod 4 Feature.  Trever Roediger took the lead from the start and looked as though he was going to get the win.  A caution near the halfway point of the race gave Hribar the shot he needed and he took it as he emerged with the lead.  Dean Larson stepped it up in the final few laps as he took second from Roediger.

“It was a great run,” said a very happy Hribar following the races.  “The car was handling awesome.  I just got lucky on that caution.  Trever had a straightaway lead.  I don’t think I would have ran him down, but got the lucky caution and got my nose underneath and drove away.”

Dean Larson won the AFCO Race of Champions Qualifier for the WISSOTA Mod 4’s that was being made up after it was rained out a week ago.  Larson took the lead from Tommy Sabraski on lap two and held off Hribar for the remainder as Larson scored the win.

Dave Cain powered his way around the top of the track as he collected the win in the AFCO Race of Champions Qualifier for the WISSOTA Modifieds that was made up as well.  Cain grabbed the lead in turn one and never looked back.  Jb Stortz turned in a stellar run, but he was no match for Cain who led by a full straightaway by the time the checkered flag waved.

Coming up on Sunday August 6th it will be the Red, White and Blue Supper Stock Shootout makeup race.  A full program of WISSOTA racing will be on tap including: Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mod 4’s and Hornets.  The Super Stocks will be racing for additional prize money.  Gates open at 4:30pm, with racing starting at 6pm.  There will not be any racing on Friday August 4th.  For more information go to www.gcspeedway.com
